Social Media A Stalkers Paradise!

A while ago the people we call 'stalkers' had it hard. Hiding in bushes, behind cars, and some even in trash cans, just to hear the latest thing that happened to us that day. Now things have changed, if someone wants to know what you are doing, where you are doing it, and even sometimes with whom, all they would need to do is follow you on twitter.

Now, let me clear one thing up before I continue. This is not a post that will be bashing social media. I myself am a very involved social media nut and update my facebook at least once a day. This is more of a warning to those of you who have an account on these different sites and use them frequently to tell others of what you're up to.

We've all heard it before, "The Internet is public domain, once you say something millions of people have access". As much as we've all heard it and even say it to others, is it really that true. I mean none of us are celebrities, so why would anyone care to know what we're doing?

By 2009 Facebook had over 30 million profiles and I'm more than sure that number has risen dramatically since then. You may be thinking "With all those profiles and all those status updates who really is going to see mine and care?" The sad truth is ... someone will and that someone may not be a friend.

I recently updated my twitter account and noticed that I had the option to show my location in the tweet. I was taken aback at the fact the location option is so very detailed and specific that I'm sure no one would have any trouble finding me if they wanted to.

I believe though that the main idea is to be safe about what you post because it could come back to bite you in the butt!

Here are couple of helpful tips to relieve the stress of someone stalking you online:

1. Do not give out your full name, address, or phone number to anyone online that you don't trust and/or don't know and that don't live in the same town as you.

2. Never give out your bank account or credit card information unless you are shopping with a well known or highly rated online business.

3. If you decide to meet someone in person from online, go to a public place and let friends and family know your plans.

4. Be careful what you say on the Internet and understand that it is becoming common practice for employers to research what you have said online as part of the hiring process. What you say today could keep you from getting hired to your dream job five years from now.

5. Never send anyone you met on the Internet any money. No matter what sob story they may tell you.

Remember Beans, being safe online is more than important that ever and I would like you all to do just that!

Till next time I'll "bean" seeing you later! =]
